about

A song kinda trying to reflect on growing up and making sense of different sides of myself, writing down some thoughts on online political discourse, and how it's bled into the mainstream, often in the worst ways. About being a queer kid whose two worlds are the scene hoods in a big city, vs. the fascist nightmare a lot of the internet was becoming in the early/mid 2010s.

I wrote this song in spring of 2023, and the line 'now one of us is murdered on the street/almost every fucking week' was loosely based on a statistic I'd seen in infro graphic on, but I don't know what that numbers' perspective actually was.

instr.: A B C C | A B C Ab | A B C | F# B/C/Ab

Once upon a time
I never wanted to fight
Why waste the energy if I
Could create, explore my mind
Was I just sheltered in subculture?

Cause with every day I grew up
Could see more and more bootlickers
Trying their damn hardest to chew up
Any community
Whose existence offends their trist reality
Whose liberation is incompatible
With a constructed status-quo
trying to frame their genocidal crusade
For the power of those most to be disdained
Hierarchies
As anything but selfish, self-centered crap

Friends lost to the haze of bigotry
Virtual spaces normalizing misogyny
Hate informed by tirades and memes
Antisemitic, transphobic nonsense screeds
Deriding all those for whom there's no room
In those rigid, privileged world views
Spurting absurd attacks at peeps
I always knew deep down  to be
my sibs and comrades
And now one of us is murdered on the street
Almost every fucking week

The disgust and hate for those whining edgelords that I've always held
proving so much more justified than I'd ever hoped

So once, and for the rest of time
I know to, and will be
Ready to fight
